ABSTRACT
The Effects of Health Illiteracy on US Indigenous Populations Health literacy is defined by the CDC as “the capacity to obtain, process, and understand health information and services needed to make appropriate decisions about their health” (“Health Literacy”). However, certain racial groups have lower levels of health literacy than others, leading to poor health outcomes resulting from a lack of understanding and therefore the inability to care for one’s long-term medical conditions. Native Americans, specifically, tend to suffer from high rates of poor health outcomes, stressing the importance of health literacy in indigenous communities.
